Early Life and Challenges

Roman Śledź, born on May 12, 1948, in the small village of Malinówka, Lublin Voivodeship, is a contemporary sculptor celebrated for his contributions to Polish folk art. Raised in a peasant family, his early education was cut short at age 16 due to the death of his father.
The tragic event led Roman Śledź and his mother to manage their farm while he simultaneously supported his younger siblings. From 1968 to 1970, he worked as a tractor driver and in construction in Lublin, balancing responsibilities with his burgeoning interest in art.

The Spark of Creativity

In 1968, a pivotal moment in Roman Śledź's biography occurred when he read an article in Gazeta Lubelska about sculptors from Wola Korybutowa. Intrigued, he attempted his first sculpture, which earned him a diploma from a museum in Lublin in 1969. This initial success propelled him into the world of Polish arts and crafts.

Recognition and Legacy

Since then, Roman Śledź has received numerous awards and acclaim within the folk art community, attracting collectors like Ludwig Zimmerer, a distinguished advocate for Polish folk art. Roman Śledź's journey is a testament to his dedication and talent in folk sculpture, enriching the cultural landscape of Poland.
